Penobscot 13
Designed by Arch Davis
A 12 ft 9 in sail-and-oar boat by Arch Davis, the little sister of his Penobscot 14, designed so teams of students could build one in a two-week WoodenBoat School course. It has five planks a side instead of six, a 4 ft 3 in beam and weighs about 155 lb. Plans show gunter (79 sq ft), lug (69) and sprit (64) rigs with a daggerboard or centerboard.
Glued lapstrake plywood is laid over fore-and-aft stringers, so planks are scribed to fit and screwed down with few clamps, a method the designer has found works for first-time builders. The designer's first boat took him about 175 hours without the rig, roughly half a Penobscot 14. The medians below come from builders who logged this boat here.
