Solo Pack
Designed by Ashes Still Water Boats
A 13 ft by 28 in solo pack canoe, drawn as a modern version of the light pack boats that were once carried through the swamps and back lakes of central Canada and the northeastern states, a lineage Ashes traces back to the Adirondacks. She is meant for protected lakes, estuaries, slow creeks and canals, with enough rocker to release at an eddy line and a low midship height that lets the paddler sit centred and still reach the water.
The plans offer a choice of recurved tumblehome or a hard chine above the load line, which gives a little more secondary stability at the cost of a fussier build, and either stemless or laminated stem construction. Seat positions are given for single or double paddle. Ashes says she can come in under 25 pounds if the builder uses 3/16 in strips, 4 oz cloth and a light hand with epoxy, and the plans carry notes on doing exactly that.
What building a Solo Pack actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
