Cat Boat 12

Designed by Jacques Mertens

An 11 ft 11 in catboat dinghy by Jacques Mertens of Bateau, a modern take on small Marconi cat-rigged boats like the Penguin and Cherub with a low chine and a wide 5 ft 3 in beam. The hull is designed at 135 lb and sets 77 sq ft of sail. It is forgiving enough for a beginner yet has the performance to race, and suits a crew of one or two.

Plywood cored epoxy composite built by the sharpie method on a jig, which the designer calls the easiest of the house's methods and fine for a first-time builder. The designer's figure is about 30 hours for hull, deck and seats plus 40 for foils and spars. Real hours from logged builds are below.
