E-Cat 24

Designed by Jacques Mertens

A 23 ft 9 in power catamaran by Jacques Mertens of Bateau, designed for E-Boat Inc. as an efficient electric cruiser. Long, fine five-panel hulls keep drag low, so a pair of 4 to 5 hp electric or gas outboards gives an all-day 6 mph cruise, and 10 hp motors about 15 mph. Beam can be built from 8 to 10 ft, and design displacement is 2,000 lb on 9 in of draft.

Thin plywood sandwiched in epoxy and fiberglass, stitch and glue, with the hulls built upside down on a jig. The designer puts it within reach of a first-time builder. The designer's figure is 40 hours per hull and no more than 200 hours to reach the sand and paint stage. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
