Shadow

Designed by Richard Woods

A 7.3 m (24 ft) trailable cruising catamaran by Richard Woods of Woods Designs, the wooden counterpart of the GRP Strider Club. It shares the Strider hulls, cold moulded or strip planked with plywood decks, but swaps daggerboards for low aspect ratio keels and carries a smaller 18.8 sq m rig with no winches. Beam 4.3 m, about 700 kg empty, four berths. Three Strider Clubs were sailed singlehanded in convoy from Plymouth to Tallinn in 1989.

A solid cockpit floor and fixed keels keep the fit out simple. Woods's minimum for Strider and Shadow is 550 hours to a basic fit out ready to paint for a practised builder, so budget 800 to 1,200 for a first round-bilge hull. Real hours from logged builds are below.
