Garvey 17

Designed by Jacques Mertens

A 16 ft 8 in vee-bottom garvey by Jacques Mertens of Bateau. The vee smooths the ride in a chop while the garvey shape gives a big deck area, reserve buoyancy and stability at low speed. Design displacement is 2,500 lb, the cockpit is self-bailing in every version, and power is 30 to 75 hp. Beam is 6 ft 7 in and hull weight about 600 lb.

Plywood cored epoxy and fiberglass composite, built as a plain stitch and glue hull or upside down on a jig. The designer allows it as a first project, adding that experience saves time and material. The designer's figure is 80 hours for the hull and 200 or more for a finished boat. Real hours from logged builds are below.
