Pontoon Cat (PC20)

Designed by Jacques Mertens

A 20 ft outboard pontoon-style power catamaran by Jacques Mertens for Bateau, intended for family day cruising, sheltered-water fishing or use as a party boat. Instead of aluminum tubes it has two fine asymmetric hulls in plywood-cored epoxy and fiberglass composite. Standard beam is 8 ft 6 in and can be set anywhere from 8 to 10 ft. It displaces 2,000 lb at an 8 in draft and takes 10 to 50 hp. Longer PC22 and PC24 versions exist.

A first-time builder can take it on, since every part has straight edges and gentle bends, though the designer suggests a small canoe first. The designer quotes 200 hours for the hull shells and 300 to 800 hours finished. Real hours from logged builds are below.
