Mbuli - A Pacific Proa

Designed by John C. Harris

A 20 ft Pacific proa beach cruiser designed and built by John Harris at Chesapeake Light Craft in 1999 and 2000,. The main hull carries an unstayed schooner rig of 192 sq ft and a small watertight cabin, 8 ft by 2 ft, that sleeps one. The crew sails from a trampoline between the hull and the windward outrigger. Overall beam is 12 ft, all-up weight about 450 lb with as much again in payload, and CLC quotes speeds above 15 knots.

Sold as plans only. Construction is 1/4 in okoume with epoxy and glass, and CLC says the plans assume a builder with a small boat or two behind them. CLC estimates 300 hours. Real hours from logged builds are below.
