Scilly Gig 15

Designed by Jacques Mertens

A 15 ft 6 in fixed-seat rowing boat by Jacques Mertens for Bateau, named after the fast pilot gigs of the Isles of Scilly and aimed at the serious oarsman. The designer quotes a top speed of 4 mph at 25 strokes a minute. It is drawn for one rower, but a second rowing position forward and 115 lb per inch of immersion let it carry a passenger and gear. Beam is 3 ft 8 in; weight is about 100 lb, or 80 lb in the light 4 mm plywood version.

Stitch and glue with butt blocks instead of scarfs. The designer's average for the hull is 40 hours; budget 60 to 110 hours finished. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
