Norwegian Gunning Dory
Designed by Paul Butler
Drawn with Scandinavian fjord workboats in mind, the Norwegian Gunning Dory is a 15 ft 9 in rowing boat with a 45 in beam, which gives good spacing for 7 to 8 ft oars. In place of the traditional vee bottom it has a flat panel for easier building and more stability, with a shallow keel or short skeg for holding course. The lightweight version can weigh under 60 lb. Plans were announced to coincide with its publication in Outdoor Life in 2010.
The ply and epoxy hull uses taped double chines as stringers and fore and aft watertight compartments in place of ribs. There is room for two fixed rowing stations or one sliding seat, and it is quick enough to make exercise rowing worthwhile. The plans are a 41 page booklet with color photographs in the download.
What building a Norwegian Gunning Dory actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
