Mill Creek 16.5 Hybrid
Designed by Chesapeake Light Craft
A 16 ft 6 in recreational kayak from Chesapeake Light Craft that pairs the standard Mill Creek 16.5 stitch-and-glue plywood hull with a cedar-strip deck. CLC digitised the deck molds after its colleague John Peck built one this way. Everything else matches the plywood boat: 33 in beam, an 88 in cockpit, 62 lb, 450 lb payload, and use as a single, a double, a sailer or a sliding-seat rowing boat. The kit supplies bead-and-cove strips, half western red and half Alaskan yellow cedar.
CLC grades it intermediate and estimates 120 hours, about 20 more than the plywood-decked version, and calls it a little more challenging. Hours recorded by builders of this design are shown below.
What building a Mill Creek 16.5 Hybrid actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
