Sassafras 12 Canoe
Designed by Chesapeake Light Craft
A 12 ft solo pack canoe from Chesapeake Light Craft, light enough at 28 lb to carry on one shoulder. It is built by CLC's LapStitch method, a stitch-and-glue way of making a lapstrake plywood hull without molds, strongback or steam bending. Beam is 28 in, payload 275 lb, and it is best paddled with a double blade. The design was reworked in 2014 as the Mark II, with a new hull and simpler construction. Kits and full-size plans are sold.
CLC rates it a beginner project, with pre-drilled wire holes, puzzle joints and a 115-page manual, and estimates 80 hours. Budget 70 to 110. Real hours from logged builds are below.
