Nimrod 12
Designed by Platt Monfort
A flat bottomed 12 ft solo canoe aimed squarely at the angler who wants to walk into a back country pond. Its 34 in beam gives enough stability for a 200 lb paddler plus fishing or camping gear, and a little rocker in the keel line lets it turn without giving up tracking. The designer's own pitch is that you can carry a 14 lb boat a couple of miles or up a mountain, and at that weight it is hard to argue.
Like the rest of Monfort's fleet it is built as a skeleton of thin wooden stringers over station molds, with diagonal Kevlar bracing, then skinned in shrunk polyester and sealed. The flat bottom makes it one of the more forgiving shapes in the range for a first project, and the plans can be bought alone or with the partial materials kit.
What building a Nimrod 12 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
