Hideaway 22
Designed by Sam Devlin
A 22 ft 0.5 in solar-electric shanty boat by Sam Devlin, built stitch and glue. It is a beachable, low-powered cruising home with a front and back porch, full headroom, a large head and a roof covered in solar panels. Beam is 8 ft 4 in, draft 1 ft 6 in, displacement 3,375 lb and dry weight 2,575 lb. The first boat, built by Kees Prins for Chelcie Liu with an electric outboard, was launched in 2024.
The Devlin shop lists a one-page study plan, with full construction plans announced as coming. A small houseboat has a simple hull but a lot of cabin joinery and electrical work. As a rule of thumb, budget 1,200 to 2,000 hours. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
What building a Hideaway 22 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
