Sandpiper 8
Designed by Sam Devlin
An 8 ft 2 in rowing and sailing dinghy by Sam Devlin, designed as both a daysailer and a yacht tender. Stitch and glue plywood, 4 ft 2 in beam, only 63 lb, with a 380 lb useful load. The 49 sq ft sprit rig breaks down for stowage, and leeboards replace a daggerboard so there is no trunk to plug when towing. It also rows well and takes an outboard of up to 2 hp.
The plans come with explicit instructions aimed at the amateur, and the designer's own figure is about 75 hours to build one. The sailing rig and leeboards add a little beyond the bare hull. Real hours from logged builds are below.
What building a Sandpiper 8 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
