Sport C Tunnel
Designed by Bob Dillon
An 11 ft 7 in tunnel boat that Bob Dillon designed and raced in the APBA Sport C class, where the usual rig is a twelve-foot tunnel with a two-cylinder 40 hp Nissan or Tohatsu. It is his second go at a Sport C boat, the first having taught him what not to do, and he ran 54 to 55 mph in it with a stock cleaver propeller while aiming for 58 or 59.
The hull is 74 in wide and weighs about 235 lb, with white pine stringers and mostly 5 mm exterior plywood in the original, plus 3 mm marine ply on the deck and cowling. Sport C rules require a reinforced cockpit, and this boat was designed around Dillon's composite cockpit, sold as separate plans, although the plywood cockpit in the set suits non-racers. He warns that hydraulic trim is close to essential and that speeds much over 60 mph are not recommended.
What building a Sport C Tunnel actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
