15' Lapstrake Canoe

A 15 ft double-paddle lapstrake canoe from Walt Simmons of Duck Trap Woodworking, the middle boat of his 13, 15 and 17 ft family, weighing about 55 lb finished. Build her the traditional way in quarter-inch cedar over steamed white ash ribs, or glued lapstrake in 6 mm okoume plywood, which needs no ribs. The page describes the type as quick under paddle yet happy to idle along a pond. Full-size plank patterns are sold for this length only.
The designer presents these canoes as the gentlest introduction to lapstrake work, using the same methods as bigger boats with much lighter stock, and two of his books cover the job. Budget 150 to 300 hours, less with the plank patterns. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
