Solo Day
Designed by Ashes Still Water Boats
The designer calls this the boat he would wish on everyone: a 15 ft by 29 in solo canoe for inland lakes, quiet rivers and sheltered bays, cut tight around the paddler so it fits almost like a kayak. Asymmetric rocker and her length let her track and cover distance, while her initial stability is enough for photography, birdwatching and, for the brave, standing up to fish.
Ashes stripped the design back on purpose. There are no decks or contrasting stems to add weight, and the recurved tumblehome both eases the reach over the gunwale and stiffens the hull for the material used. The plans include construction notes aimed at a finished weight of about 30 pounds. She is drawn for a single blade, though owners report a double paddle works well. Like every Ashes plan, the set gives full size stations and details but leaves the method to a book such as Gilpatrick's or Ted Moores'.
What building a Solo Day actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
