King Canvasback
Designed by Grandpa's Archive
King Canvasback is a 15 ft kayak with a 31 in beam, weighing 65 lb, which Mechanix Illustrated produced by redesigning and lengthening its earlier Canvasback after kayak racing on Olympic television raised interest. The article put the cost at about $85 against several hundred for a bought kayak, and called it a good father-and-son project.
Ten parts are cut from plywood, laid out from cardboard or newspaper templates; because plywood plies run both ways the grain direction does not matter. Frames, stem and stern are clamped together and sanded to shape, and the keelson is tapered and screwed to the stem and stern. One man can handle it and two will fit on a small car.
What building a King Canvasback actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
