Christmas Wherry

A 15 ft lapstrake wherry for oars and sail by Walt Simmons of Duck Trap Woodworking, drawn to sit between his Duck Trap Wherry and the much larger Newfoundland Trap Skiff. With a length to beam ratio of 3 to 1 she is the beamiest of the family, which gives room aboard and the fullness forward to carry a high-peaked lugsail. The same offsets build any length from 14 to 19 ft, in traditional planking or glued lapstrake plywood on a plank keel.
The designer's site shows one built and sailed by a first-time builder, and a photo book follows a glued lapstrake 15-footer with fitted sawn frames. Expect some patience with lining off and planking. Budget 400 to 800 hours. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
