Fishing 20
Designed by Dudley Dix
A 20 ft 10 in (6.33 m) hard chine open workboat by Dudley Dix, commissioned to replace the traditional wooden fishing boats of Lake Malawi. It is drawn for steel and can be built in aluminum, with a plywood wet deck and seating bonded in afterwards so the hull can be painted properly. It also suits ferry, dive and harbour work. A 20 hp outboard is the economical choice and 80 hp is the safe maximum.
The hull is plated over a spaceframe with three permanent frames, a method aimed at quick production runs, and it can be stretched or widened. Basic welding skill is needed. Budget 300 to 600 hours as a rule of thumb. Real hours from logged builds are below.
What building a Fishing 20 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
