SnowShoe 12
Designed by Platt Monfort
The SnowShoe 12 is where Geodesic Airolite boats started as a plan line: Platt Monfort finished its drawings in August 1982, after testing his Kevlar braced framing idea, which came out of an ultralight airplane project, on an 8 lb prototype canoe. It is a fast, straight running solo canoe meant to be paddled with a double blade from a thin foam pad on the floor, which keeps the weight low and the boat steady.
The designer likens the job to building a model rather than a boat, and calls it a good first project. A design for an easy double paddle comes with the plans. The prototype went on a five year museum touring exhibition of contemporary craft. Several later designs, including the Arrow 14, were developed by stretching this hull.
What building a SnowShoe 12 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
