A customer wanted to start a boat-based youth training scheme and had looked at building a pair of new naval whalers, which cost far beyond anything he could raise. The two of them worked out the key features of the 27 ft clinker naval trainer and Welsford translated them into something affordable and buildable by volunteers, using the plywood lapstrake over web frames and stringers of the yawl-rigged Navigator. Double ended, two masted, with enough sheer to be genuinely pretty, and costed at the time at around NZ$4,000 of materials and about 220 hours of competent labour.
A 19 ft 8 in clinker double-ender on Navy whaler lines, built glued lapstrake and rigged with 175 sq ft. Carries a crew and their gear on a 7 ft beam at 300 kg including the centreboard, and draws 10 in with the board up against 4 ft 5 in down.
