Caledonia Yawl
Designed by Iain Oughtred
A 19 ft 6 in double-ended sail-and-oar boat by Iain Oughtred, on Shetland-inspired lines and among the best-known glued lapstrake designs. The WoodenBoat Store sells the Caledonia Yawl II, the seven-plank version, which the seller says some find a little easier to plank because the garboard is narrower. Beam is 6 ft 4 1/2 in, hull weight 450 lb and about 650 lb all up, with 164 sq ft of sail as a balanced lug or gunter yawl.
Glued lapstrake plywood, no lofting required, rated intermediate by the plans seller; the ten sheets come with 17 pages of designer's notes. No build time is published; budget 600 to 900 hours. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
What building a Caledonia Yawl actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
