Daniels Boat

Twelve-year-old Daniel had outgrown his first skiff, and his father arranged to spend a Christmas at Welsford's place building boats. The brief: light enough to roof-rack or for a youngster to drag up a beach, big enough for three adults sailing or five rowing so she could tender a yacht, seaworthy enough for the four-mile crossing to the grandparents on Waiheke Island, fast enough to race in the kids' classes at the Waiheke regatta, and built on the thinnest of budgets. She was given extra flare to keep light crew weight outboard where it does most good, plenty of freeboard, a cutout for an outboard, and an underwater shape that will plane when lightly loaded.
A 10 ft 6 in flat-bottomed skiff drawn for a twelve year old who had outgrown his first boat, and built by father and son over a Christmas. Light at 65 kg, with 51 sq ft of sail, and simple enough to be somebody's first build as well as their first boat.
