Sweet Pea
Designed by John Welsford
Drawn as a club racer for an estuary with nearly 200 miles of sheltered tidal coastline and a mostly older membership, so she needed simple cruising accommodation as well as class racing performance. Welsford proposed the club build bare hull and deck sets together, which kept the class honest through a shared jig and patterns and brought bulk buying within reach; six were finished in the first winter. The two versions offered here measure under the same class rules but are structured for building one at a time.
A 17 ft 5 in centreboarder drawn as a club racer for a large, shallow estuary, and built either as a 198 sq ft sloop or as a 180 sq ft cruising yawl with two bunks and space for a cooker. Draws 8 in with the board up and 4 ft 5 in down, on a 7 ft 4 in beam.
