Paper Tiger
Designed by Ron Given
The Paper Tiger is a 14 ft catamaran drawn by Ron Given in New Zealand in 1968 and built in garages around the country ever since. She is an unballasted twin hull racer with a rotating aluminium mast and a fully battened main of about 100 sq ft, sailed single-handed, and she remains one of the most popular home-built multihull classes in New Zealand and Australia.
The hulls are about 7 ft apart and the boat weighs roughly 160 lb rigged, against a class minimum of about 110 lb for the bare platform. Class rules allow plywood, fiberglass, Kevlar or carbon hulls, and more than half of all new Paper Tigers are still built by amateurs, many of them in plywood. The New Zealand Paper Tiger Owners Association is the place for plans, measurement and advice on rebuilding an older boat.
What building a Paper Tiger actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
