Pixie 14
Designed by Richard Woods
A 4.3 m (14 ft 2 in) car-toppable beach catamaran by Richard Woods of Woods Designs, first sailed in 1981, with hundreds sold since. Stitch and glue plywood, 75 kg empty with each hull around 20 kg, 11.5 sq m of sail, one or two crew. Rounded vee hulls do away with daggerboards, and slot-together beams let it go from roof rack to sailing in about 15 minutes. WoodenBoat magazine also sells the plans.
Woods aims it at people new to both boatbuilding and catamarans, and Scout groups and schools have built it. His own minimum for a beach cat is about 120 hours ready to paint for a practised builder, so a first-timer might budget 150 to 250. Real hours from logged builds are below.
