Gypsy

Designed by Richard Woods

An 8.5 m (28 ft) budget offshore cruising catamaran with a central cuddy by Richard Woods of Woods Designs, his own cruising boat for five years. Flat panel dory hulls in sheet plywood are standard, with strip cedar round-bilge or foam sandwich as options. Beam 5.4 m, about 1.8 tonnes empty, 38 sq m of sail, standing headroom in hulls and cuddy, four berths. Woods rates it the minimum size for a couple to cruise oceans, and several have made ocean passages.

It can be built in sections and assembled beside the water. Woods was day sailing his after about 1,000 hours and lists 1,500 as a practised builder's minimum to a basic fit out, so budget 2,000 to 3,000 first time. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
