Salish 28
Designed by Richard Woods
An 8.5 m (28 ft) minimum coastal racing catamaran by Richard Woods of Woods Designs, inspired by the 2015 Race to Alaska and named for the Salish Sea. Chined hulls in 6 mm plywood, two aluminium crossbeams, a bowsprit for screecher and spinnaker, offset daggerboards, and rowing positions. Beam 5.8 m, about 700 kg empty, 50 sq m of main and jib, a single berth in each hull. A cruising version has a longer cabin and a 30 sq m mainsail.
Flat-bottomed hulls travel on a flat bed trailer and a crew can assemble the boat in a couple of hours. The interior is spartan, which keeps the build short for the length. As a rule of thumb budget 1,000 to 1,800 hours. Real hours from logged builds are below.
