A 52 ft 6 in design from Jay Benford's catalog, drawn for steel chine construction. North Star follows the revised 50 ft Seaclusion with extra length at both ends and substantial additions to the accommodation, and she is the design that shows how much living space one of these hulls will carry. The Coasters were drawn for the Florida Bay Coaster Company and licensed to them; with that company closed the plans are sold directly to anyone who wants one built. They are freighter yachts: ship-shaped, shoal-draft liveaboards with house-sized accommodation, meant to be lived aboard rather than raced or day-sailed.
Benford publishes a displacement of 120,000 lb in coastal cruising trim, which is tanks full with the crew and their stores aboard rather than a shipping weight. Plans are sold to owner-builders, and study plans are sold separately for anyone wanting to look before committing.
