A 50 ft design from Jay Benford's catalog, drawn for steel chine construction. The Coasters were drawn for the Florida Bay Coaster Company and licensed to them; with that company closed the plans are sold directly to anyone who wants one built. They are freighter yachts: ship-shaped, shoal-draft liveaboards with house-sized accommodation, meant to be lived aboard rather than raced or day-sailed.
Benford publishes a displacement of 105,000 lb in coastal cruising trim, which is tanks full with the crew and their stores aboard rather than a shipping weight. Plans are sold to owner-builders, and study plans are sold separately for anyone wanting to look before committing.
