50 ft Coasters FL Bay, Seaclusion, & Rubicon

A 50 ft design from Jay Benford's catalog, drawn for steel chine construction. The 50 ft Florida Bay was the first Coaster built and remains the designer's own favourite of the series. Seaclusion is the first of the revised 50s, an expanded version of the successful 45s with an extra guest cabin or study forward of the galley, and Rubicon is a third variation on the same hull. The Coasters were drawn for the Florida Bay Coaster Company and licensed to them; with that company closed the plans are sold directly to anyone who wants one built. They are freighter yachts: ship-shaped, shoal-draft liveaboards with house-sized accommodation, meant to be lived aboard rather than raced or day-sailed.

Benford publishes a displacement of 95,000/110,000/110,000 lb in coastal cruising trim, which is tanks full with the crew and their stores aboard rather than a shipping weight. Plans are sold to owner-builders, and study plans are sold separately for anyone wanting to look before committing.
