10-Foot Little Auk
Designed by Nick Schade
A 10 ft strip-planked recreational kayak drawn by Nick Schade and sold by Chesapeake Light Craft. It is 28 in wide, weighs about 30 lb and suits paddlers of 110 to 190 lb, with a 250 lb payload. It is meant for harbours, small lakes and shallow creeks, and is short enough to live on the deck of a larger boat. CLC offers a complete kit with milled cedar strips, a forms-only kit and full-size plans.
CLC rates it intermediate: some woodworking, epoxy and fiberglass experience helps, and there is more cutting and fitting than in its beginner kits. CLC's estimate is 120 hours, and strip patterns and finish can stretch that. Real hours from logged builds are below.
