Black Brant III
Designed by Sam Devlin
A 14 ft 3 in duck-hunting boat by Sam Devlin, with kit packages from Chesapeake Light Craft and plans bought from Devlin. It is a shallower, faster development of his Black Brant, for hunters who run long distances through thin water. Beam is 66 in, draft 7.5 in, dry weight about 225 lb, and it takes outboards to 30 hp. Devlin describes it as a boat for two to three hunters.
Stitch-and-glue construction from traditional plans. CLC rates it advanced and expects a tablesaw, a bandsaw and sound epoxy skills. CLC's estimate is 200 hours, depending heavily on the level of finish. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
What building a Black Brant III actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
