Design
14 ft Tug Bullhead , Trawler Yacht & Grivit
Designed by Jay R. Benford
A 14 ft design from Jay Benford's catalog, drawn for Airex cored fibreglass or cold moulded construction, so the same hull can be built in whichever suits the shop. Benford spent 1966 to 1968 as staff naval architect at Foss Launch and Tug in Seattle, which ran well over a hundred tugs at the time, so the tug designs come out of real towing practice rather than out of a styling exercise. The tug yachts carry modest power for economical cruising and far more accommodation than a working boat would have, and most can still be powered to do useful work.
Benford publishes an estimated structural weight of 3,675 lb. Plans are sold to owner-builders, and full-sized patterns come with them and study plans are sold separately for anyone wanting to look before committing.
