Launched

Jersey Girl

Jim Norman's 20 foot houseboat, built in his northern New Jersey driveway from 2015 to 2021. The design started from Roy Schreyer's Dianne's Rose, stretched three feet and reworked into his own. Okoume plywood hull over sawn frames and bulkheads, a cabin of cedar posts and laminated roof beams sheathed in pine beadboard, and a fiberglassed arched roof with gull wing panels over the aft deck. Launched on the Hackensack River in May 2021, she now cruises Lake Hopatcong, where she took the Ladies' Choice award at the 2024 antique and classic boat show.

Houseboat update, Sunday, May 19, 2019 -- Suddenly, it's summer in northern New Jersey, the sun is shining, and I have a chance to get back to work on Jersey Girl. Today, I installed the four forward cabin bulkhead posts. The fore deck entry will go between the two center posts. On the left side of the picture, you're looking at where the helm will be, and on the right will be a seat for a passenger, facing forward or in toward the center, depending on his or her preference. More tomorrow, if weather permits.

Houseboat update, Monday, May 20, 2019 -- One of my design modifications for Jersey Girl was to recess the central portion of the fore deck to provide comfortable outdoor seating space with a footwell, and a taller entry door into the cabin. That will require a railing, for safety. Today, I am starting to make two of the six posts I will need to wrap the railing around the deck and accommodate for convenient entry gates. These posts are going to require some creative saw work to make them fit around the frame of the hull and into the angle of the bow. I'll describe what I'm doing with each picture of the process..

Houseboat update, Tuesday, May 21, 2019 -- just a little more fitting and below-deck prep work, and the floor of the recessed forward deck should be ready to be glued and screwed into place, maybe tomorrow. The other thing I did today was work on the two main longitudinal roof beams, which will run from the aft cabin bulkhead to the forward cabin bulkhead. I may be able to install them tomorrow as well. We'll see.

A view from the bridge.

Houseboat update, Wednesday, May 22, 2019 -- A view from the bridge. Well, the helm, anyway. Or, in any event, where Jersey Girl's helm will be. The recessed central portion of the fore deck is permanently glued and screwed into place. I sure hope I can remember what I did with that hatch cover. I know it's around here somewhere.

Nobody else here is logging a Jersey Girl yet. See the boat.
